PSP lifted off in August 2018 and has already flown faster and closer to the sun than any other probe in history. The STEREO-B probe went silent in 2014, but STEREO-A, which took the recent NEOWISE picture, is still going strong. This passage through the planetary region increases the comet's orbital period from about 4400 years to about 6700 years.

SOHO launched in 1995, and the twin STEREO craft got aloft in 2006. Comet NEOWISE made its closest approach to the Sun ( perihelion) on July 3, 2020, at a distance of 0.29 AU (43 million km 27 million mi). You can follow both events live here at, courtesy of NASA, or directly via the agency.

Lindley Johnson, planetary defense officer and program executive of NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office, NASA headquarters.EDT (1900 GMT) tomorrow, then follow that up with a news conference at 4 p.m. The agency will host a Comet NEOWISE "NASA Science Live" broadcast at 3 p.m. You can learn more about the comet, which was discovered in March of this year by NASA's Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer spacecraft (hence the name), via a pair of NASA events tomorrow (July 15). Here's what to know.Processed data from the WISPR instrument on NASA’s Parker Solar Probe shows greater detail in the twin tails of comet NEOWISE, as seen on July 5, 2020. Explanation: Rounding the Sun on July 3rd and currently headed for the outer Solar System, Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) has been growing brighter in the predawn skies of planet Earth. Take a minute to forget everything else going on right now. Regardless of race, color, sex, creed, age, profession, or any other distinguishing characteristics, we cannot help but gaze towards the heavens and become lost in its beauty. How this cosmic being has brought humankind together. What stories it could tell, what sights it has beheld. A celestial visitor that has been around since the beginning of our universe. iss063e040072 (July 5, 2020) - The tiny shooting star in the lower center of this image is Comet Neowise pictured from the International Space Station as it orbited above the Mediterranean Sea in between Tunisia and Italy.
